A Little MTGO Modern Teachings Update
This evening, I managed to get in a few matches of Modern w/ my Esper Teachings deck. Some of you expressed interest in how that’s going, so I thought I’d post a few match notes:
- Game only - played against a Mill/Fog deck. I used Extirpate on Dampen Thought, but I think in retrospect, I probably should have nailed either a Fog effect or Howling Mine. Either way, it was reasonably close, but I lost. We didn’t get to board, but I would have brought in Negates and maybe removed some dead cards for Geists just to speed up my pressure.
- Match against Soul Sisters - 2-0’d this guy. He had a fast start on the play in the first game, but I had removal and then played Elspeth. Post-board, I had removal and then played Elspeth.
- Match against RG Aggro - 2-0’d this guy. First game, I had to Needle Chandra Firebrand and gain 16 with Rest for the Weary to survive a bunch of burn, Goblin Guides and Hellspark Elementals, but I ended up taking it down from 7 life with him out of resources and me having Tar Pit, Snapcaster, Elspeth. Post-board, he keeps a Grove/Punishing Fire hand. I play a Geist of Saint Traft, and he concedes after his next draw, for some reason.
- Match against Zoo - won the first game on the draw. He drew a lot of lands and I didn’t draw enough, but I had Path, Smother, Doom Blade, Snapcaster, Snapcaster and a Teachings for Rest, so I felt pretty good. I DC’d during side-boarding, so I didn’t get to try out my post-board plan here, which is to bring in Timely and Geists, remove some sweepers, lower my curve and play a lopsided attrition war.
Notes on the Deck
I was facing enough control/combo decks where Consume the Meek and Pact of Negation weren’t good enough to get there. So I cut those and wanted to add a card which would help me against control decks in particular. I went with two main deck Elspeth and they were a house in the aggro matches. I’d still like to test it out against control, where the idea is to just add more pressure. I was hoping to play against some Grixis, Tron or the mirror, but no dice.
Also, Rest for the Weary is insane.
