Polish’s Deck Tech: Black Necro 1996

1996 - A summer where The Spice Girls ruled the charts, Pokemon became a part of the American lexicon, and an Apple laptop took down an entire alien mothership. It was also the last year you could use some of the most broken cards ever made for mono-black decks.

Looking back, this was the deck to fear in library (assuming anyone had the money to actually put a SOLID list together). I was able to beat this deck most of the time with my White Weenie deck through a lot of luck sacking and Eye for an Eye shenanigans. White Knight was my all star & Serra Angel was just the cherry on top!

Through the magical science of money, I was able to reconstruct an average Necropotence deck. Obviously no way legal in any current sanctioned format, there was a time that this list was LEGAL in Standard (Type 2 for you older folks). The only unfortunate thing about the deck, it has not aged well in today’s tempo heavy formats.

Remember, this was Magic the Gathering back in 1996. The only fancy thing the deck offered outside of Necropotence was Dark Ritualing into a Hypnotic Specter turn 1. In hindsight, this was a neat idea, but completely broken in casual games… Here’s some highlights of the deck’s legacy:

Turn 1 - Swamp > Dark Ritual > Hypnotic Specter
Turn 2 - Swamp > Hymn to Tourach > Attack w/Hypnotice Specter (pray you mana screw them).
Turn 3 - Stripmine > Continue doing whatever you’re doing.

That’s pretty much the main highlight of the deck. Not that the deck is super terrible, I mean you had access to 4 Strip Mines in a deck back then! Decks then weren’t as flashy as they are now. I mean, just compare some old favorites like Sengir Vampire to Drana for example. I can’t complain about the powercreep in the game, but once they start slapping that mythic rarity on them and the secondary market starts manipulating the prices… *HULKS UP*

Main Deck:
4 Hypnotic Specter
4 Order of the Ebon Hand
2 Sengir Vampire

3 Contagion
4 Dark Ritual
4 Drain Life
2 Demonic Consultation
4 Hymn to Tourach
4 Necropotence
4 Nevinyrral’s Disk
1 Zuran Orb

4 Mishra’s Factory
4 Strip Mine
16 Swamp

1 Black Vise
3 Dark Banishing
3 Dystopia
2 Demonic Consultation
2 Icy Manipulator
1 Ihsan’s Shade
1 Ivory Tower
2 Serrated Arrows

Ihsan’s Shade x1000. I always preferred him to the Willow who was merely a seasonal choice.
